Achieve your Goals AND Enjoy your JourneyWe all have things we want to be. Or do. Or achieve. In going after what you want, do you consider sacrificing present happiness for future bliss? This is often the case, but there is a better way! What is the secret to achieving your goals AND enjoying the journey?

The first step is clarifying exactly what you want so that your path becomes clear. One of my clients described finding clarity and his path extremely well last week and graciously endorsed me sharing it with you.  He described his path as the Yellow Brick Road in the Wizard of Oz.  He explained how, right now, his yellow brick road is covered in a soupy fog. As he continues to progress day by day, that fog lifts a bit.  He has faith that soon all of the fog will be lifted and his path (The Yellow Brick Road) will be clear—at that point it is just a matter of continuing along the path and enjoying the journey.Yellow Brick Road

What a lovely visual, right? How would you like to have such a clear vision for your future and the famous Yellow Brick Road for your path?

Life is a journey and surprises come up along the way. For instance, just as Dorothy experienced in The Wizard of Oz, people flow in and out of your life—some deeply enrich the journey, some you learn and share with, and some are there in passing. From time to time you are skipping along with your friends when a wicked witch or a gang of super scary flying monkeys pop up! How you react to these surprises along your journey is totally up to you.

I remember watching The Wizard of Oz as a kid. Do you? What is interesting is even though I was a tough kid, those monkeys had me cuddling up to my dog for protection and closing the window blinds. To say the least, they were super scary—much in the same way that life’s obstacles can seem so burdensome in the moment. Now when I see a clip of the flying monkeys they seem fake and not scary at all. When you look back, years in the past, to life’s hurdles, do they often appear less daunting than when you were living through them? What are some ways you can gain perspective in the moment when surprises pop up on your path? A secret weapon is focus. Focus on where you are going, how you are going to get there, and remind yourself to appreciate the adventure all along the way.

What does focus mean to you? To me focus is: clarifying and being attentive to the task at hand, eliminating distractions, simplifying, and concentrating on getting the important things done that make a difference in the big picture. How would your life change, personally and professionally, if you kept your focus on where you were going versus concentrating on concerns that may pop up, like the flying monkeys?

Over a decade ago, while endeavoring to be the best mountain biker I could be, a lesson in a book hit me in the chest and changed my life forever. In his book, Mastering Mountain Bike Skills, Brian Lopez said:

“Focus on what is important… and let your peripheral vision handle everything else.”

Like many people careening down a mountain trail—and through life—I looked at, focused on, and gave a lot of attention to the bumps in the road and boulders in the way. How else will you maneuver around them, right? Brian revealed that there is a flow in riding that only comes from scanning the trail quite a distance ahead and noticing obstructions, but never looking right at them. When there is a hole, a tree stump, a huge rock, or any other obstruction, never look at it! Focus all of your attention down the trail—you will sense the overall flow, elevate your perception, and increase your speed. Instead of looking at an obstruction, look at the exact line on the ground you want your tires to follow and let your peripheral vision take care of everything else. You may be thinking (just like I did): “Wait, wait, so as I am barreling down this mountain trail making split-second decisions while risking life and limb, by just looking at where I want to go, the bike will magically steer itself right where it should? Yeah. Right.”

I changed how I rode and purposefully focused on the exact line I wanted to take while keeping my attention down the trail. Of course I noticed obstacles on the path, but never again did I focus on them. Suddenly rides became smoother, more efficient, and much more fun.

Imagine having intense clarity about what you want in life, and then choosing to truly focus on your path. What will happen?

Your life becomes easier, your actions are more efficient, and the ride is more enjoyable. Soon those flying monkeys that once stopped you in your tracks seem harmless and, with practice, they may vanish altogether.

The choice to enjoy the journey while achieving your goals is yours. Clarifying what you really want so that the fog lifts and reveals your yellow brick road is a fantastic start.  Then it is just a matter of keeping focused and enjoying the ride.

Until the next revolution…

The Wind is Your Firend

Often, the most valuable outcomes in life come from experiencing challenges and prevailing.

Even though we inherently know challenges make us stronger, why do so many people have the tendency to quit when things get tough? What if the breakthrough was right around the corner and you miss the magical part by throwing in the towel?

The magic happens when you move forward through the obstacle and have the chance to grow: to transform and experience something uncharted, fresh, and exhilarating.

How would your life change if you approached your most daunting hurdles as if they are necessary and beneficial to reach new heights, do amazing things, and become the best version of you?

Jump on a bicycle and take a ride with me!

Imagine we are riding along and the wind is blowing against you—is it an obstacle? The answer is your choice: it can be… if you think it is.

The wind does many things:

  • Pushing into a headwind makes you stronger.
  • A gusting wind keeps you on your toes and constantly responding consciously and instinctively.
  • A tailwind is a marvelous thing—you can tootle along briskly without much effort. It is easy! Although, when you pedal hard with the wind, hitting 35+ miles per hour is fun too.

Think about times in your life when you experienced each of these three states:

  • Headwind– You are working hard. Maybe wondering when you will catch a break, if it is worth it, or if you can make it around the next bend.
  • Gusting wind- A state of change and unpredictable conditions.
  • Tailwind– Times when life seems to be flowing easily as if something is gently propelling you forward.

Take a moment and pluck a situation from your memory bank for each type of “wind.” When did you experience the most growth? What brought about positive change?

Chances are, the headwind and/or unpredictable times triggered the most change. Consider the gifts you received from those situations. What did you learn? How did you transform? How did this benefit others?

This is easy and fun

Back to the bike. When I ride, my goal is to be completely relaxed. However, sometimes “relaxing” gets thrown out the window when I turn into a headwind or I’m trying to keep up with stronger riders. My face is furrowed in determination. My arms are rigid with tension. My knuckles are white from the death grip on the bars. Why? Well, as when things get tough in life, our reaction to stress is so strong! We dig in. We fight. We strain.

Although, this reaction is generally not helpful. After realizing I am tensed up, I relax my death grip and tell myself, “This is easy and fun.” Would you believe that it gets easier? It does! Once I relax: all of my energy is permitted to flow through my legs and power my bike. My steering improves. My breathing slows. Being relaxed is so much more efficient… and more comfortable. It isn’t always easy to shift my perspective and relax, but the more I do it, the more effortless it becomes. This was not initially natural to me. Through being coached, I learned to apply this principle more easily. Now I coach my clients on this as well. Practice it: “This is easy and fun.” Notice the shift in energy. Continue practicing.

Recovery: A very necessary ingredient

Sometimes when the wind is kicking your butt, it is time to take it easy! “Wait, what?! But you just said pushing through the tough times is what makes the magic happen!” If this is what you are thinking, you are right. Obstacles often provide a means for growth, BUT, you must take care of yourself and recharge. Be open to evaluate situations and recognize when you need recovery so that you will be revitalized to charge ahead. This decision of whether to recharge or put your nose to the grindstone is very personal. Each situation is different. Through experience, you learn when to rest. Practice makes the decision easier.

For example, while on a recent ride, my legs felt like sandbags and I was struggling to keep up with my riding partner. I knew this feeling and it wasn’t “normal.” My legs were heavy because I was fatigued. Decision time: I could push through and keep going, but my body was asking for a rest. If I continued to try to ride at that level of effort, my future rides would suffer. So, I sent my partner on his merry way and turned around to peddle easily downwind. While happily appreciating my surroundings, I gave my legs a much needed rest. Years of riding and evaluating allowed me to make the decision. It’s not an exact science—you must practice noticing, feeling, deciding, and evaluating the results. Rest and recovery are keys to longevity.

And then there is drafting

Are you ready for a fun ride? Drafting is when a cyclist rides closely to the rider in front of him/her to make use of their slipstream, greatly reducing wind resistance and effort required. The rider in front notices no ill effects and, in fact, can experience a slight advantage. This makes it possible to go much faster and farther together as a unit. Drafting works with as little as two people, but it can work even better when a skilled group is working as a unit—imagine a flock of birds in a V-form. They instinctively make use of the same principle.

Geese Drafting in a V-Form

When is the last time you drafted in life? When have you worked with someone to get somewhere much faster and easier than you ever imagined? There are many different routes to creating a synergistic situation that will propel you and others forward. A coaching partnership is a great example: The relationship between a trained coach and a client creates synergy. The client soon generates even more synergy in their own relationships, creating a ripple effect. To experience the drafting power of coaching for yourself, apply for a complimentary strategy session.

We all know: There will be headwinds. There will be gusty erratic winds. There will be awesome tailwinds. It is up to you to take advantage of each:

  • Use the wind to become stronger, smarter, and improve your instincts.
  • Learn to release tension and relax to increase productivity.
  • Recognize when it’s time to rest and recover so that you can be stronger than ever.
  • Create a drafting situation- team up with the right people to boost efficiency.

The Secret of Yourevolution
Yourevolution- You have done it countless times. Each time is different, but also the same. Fully engaging in the process is vital to creating an amazing future.  How will you make the most of your next opportunity?

The idea of the word, Yourevolution, first appeared in my thoughts some time in 2014 and has been evolving ever since.  This concept has been relentlessly pulling me forward and hopefully it will spark a similar response within you!

Each of us has a myriad of life experiences which molded us into who we are today.  There is a cycle which we are a part of and which we take part in. How you respond to life’s joys and obstacles combined with why you take action has everything do to with the flow of the cycle and the outcomes you experience. What does this mean for you? I’ll explain…

Your View

Yourevolution- How would you pronounce that? Did you say it out loud? If not, I invite you to say “Yourevolution.”  How did it sound?

There are actually 3 ways to pronounce it… and you get to choose!

You Revolution

Your Evolution

You’re Volution

These three expressions relate to three stages in the adventure of life.  You have been the key player in the process numerous times.  You have also helped others through their journey. Still wondering?

Let’s explore- The secret of the triumvirate is revealed below

The Nitty Gritty

Revolution is such a stirring word with varied definitions.  The meaning to focus on here is:

Revolution– A dramatic and wide reaching change in the way something works, is organized, or in people’s ideas about it. (For example- transforming your life, career, and purpose).

Evolution– The gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form (For example- personal growth).

Volution… are you thinking “What the heck is volution?” Yes, I wondered the same thing at first!  If you know what it means, well you are either pure genius or peruse dictionaries in your spare time.

Volutionrolling or revolving motion.

So the triumvirate now reads:

You Revolution You decide to transform or make a change

Your Evolution– You are deliberately progressing forward and experiencing personal growth

You’re Volution– You are rolling! You are not only excelling, but surpassing your goals and dreams!

The three stages embody the continuous process we all have the ability to experience throughout our lives. The cherry on top is: there is no limit to the number of times you are able to go through and reap the benefits of transforming, growing, and surpassing your goals and dreams.  In fact, you have done it many times already.

A Look Back

Take a moment and think about the stages in your life and changes you have experienced along the way. Yes, you have done it! You have achieved mastery over and over again. The “simple” task of walking was not always so simple- There was a day looooong ago that “baby you” decided it was time to take a chance, make a change and get up off your knees. You may have fallen hundreds of times, but you progressed and eventually took your first few wobbly steps. Then you walked steadily and soon were scaring the heck out of your loved ones while running through the house in nothing but your diapers. When walking became easy, what was your next challenge? Over and over again throughout your life you have risen to the occasion and excelled.  The best kept secret is: You have the opportunity to transform, grow and surpass your goals and dreams many many more times!  This process doesn’t stop.  The opportunity to advance is limitless.

Your Opportunities!

It is up to you to keep the ball rolling. Those three water drops in the Yourevolution logo represent each of the three phases. You have the power to decide when it is time to transform, take action to grow, and then experience the joy of having that momentum and rolling.  Sometime later you will feel the urge to go through the process again. Each time you will raise the bar a bit more while using your knowledge and life experiences to excel even higher.

What is the next big phase in your adventure called “life”? Is it your career? Your personal life? Your happiness? Your purpose?

Just as learning to walk is instinctual, so is thriving in life.  Just as someone encouraged you, guided you, and had your best interest in mind as you were first learning to walk, a coach will do the same for you now in your journey to be wildly successful and happy.  Now is the time to realize your desires, meaning recognizing AND achieving your dreams and goals.

A massive Yourevolution- The Secretamount of wisdom lies within this old Chinese proverb- “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.  The second best time is now.”

When and where are you going to plant your tree? What are the fruits of your tree? How will you harvest your dreams? What skills do you already have? Why is your dream important? What sort of person would you be once your dream is a reality? Who else will benefit from you achieving your dreams?

Live your amazing adventure!

Plant. Your. Tree.

Now is the time for Yourevolution.

Until the next revolution…
